First portion which is half of the plate should consist of non-starch vegetables like lettuce, spinach, broccoli, peppers, green beans, carrots, tomatoes, cabbage, celery along with mushrooms etc. also, it is recommended that quantity of corn, potatoes, peas, yams be reduced.
Next one fourth of plate should consists of meat protein from eggs, beef, fish, chicken, cottage cheese, turkey, lamb etc. and the remaining one fourth of the plate should have bread, crackers, rice, potatoes, cereal, peas soup, yams, lentils etc. Besides choosing from these foods, the diet should contain sugar-free non-fat yoghurt or milk and one servicing of fruits like apple, berries, citrus fruit and guava.
